While the healthcare industry landscape has changed over the last several decades, one thing has remained the same – networking.  Networking is important for anyone who wants a career in the healthcare sector.  Not only will it help you find the perfect job, but it will help you build valuable relationships and continue learning.  Here are a few networking tips to help you in the healthcare industry:

  • Internships – while internships are less now than in the past, there are still some specific niches in the healthcare industry that utilize internships. These opportunities will allow you to learn while determining if the specific role is a good fit for you.
  • Associations – joining a professional association or organization is a great idea for networking. There are specific associations for specific healthcare niches and roles, as well as organizations that offer continuing education and more.  Find a group that is relevant to your field or a field you want to get into and join.
  • Social Media – many in the healthcare industry feel that social media is not for this specific industry, however, many people, organizations, and businesses have learned otherwise. Social media is a great place to connect with others in a similar field, and many associations and organizations are on social media.  Consider connecting on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.
  • Flexibility – while most in the healthcare industry know the specific course or niche they want to work, it is important to keep an open mind and remain flexible. Being open to an alternative care path may produce unexpected opportunities for you.  Be flexible in your networking as well.  Consider joining groups that are outside your normal niche.
  • Training – whenever the opportunity arises to cross-train, you should do so. Not only does this give you more skills, but allows you to work with others outside your specific niche.  You may develop great relationships during cross-training, and find another area of healthcare you enjoy working.
