As the hiring shortage continues in long-term care and senior care, many hiring managers are starting to look outside the healthcare industry to find candidates that would be great additions to the team.  Becoming creative with recruiting is nothing new in this industry but looking outside the industry for qualified workers is something new for many.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you want to look outside the senior care industry for your next hire:

  • There is a lot of misconception surrounding working in the healthcare industry, especially in the senior care aspect of it. Take the time to promote the fun side of the industry and how fulfilling a career in long-term care can be.  Most of the younger workforce today is looking to work in positions that make a difference – you need to show them the difference they can make!
  • Instead of sticking with the same recruiting practices, it is time to think outside the box. Invest in multiple channels and methods for your job postings.  Social media, job fairs, and networking groups are all great ways to get the word out.
  • One of the main reasons so many candidates stay clear of the healthcare industry is because the application process is long and drawn out. Streamline your process and make it as easy as possible.
  • It is important that you engage new employees as early in the process as possible. Emerge them in the culture, show them the flexibility that is offered, and show them how great your current team is.  These are all important to job candidates today.  They want to belong to something they feel good about!

Many hiring managers in the long-term care industry will tell you that it takes a special person to become a dedicated employee.  While this is true, have you looked outside the senior care industry for your next special person?  You may be surprised by what you find!
